Residents in the Central Okanagan Regional District can dispose of their household hazardous wastes, year round, at The Battery Doctors:

Please note volume restrictions and overlimit fees apply per visit for some residential household hazardous waste. Commercial customers should contact Battery Doctors to determine applicable fees.

Waste Paint

Household Paint

Covered by Product Care Program. container no larger than 20 litres and no limit for Product Care Paints.

  • Interior and Exterior latex and oil based consumer paint
  • Deck and floor coating
  • Wood stains
  • Varnish and urethane (single compound)
  • Concrete and masonry paint
  • Drywall paint
  • Undercoats and primers
  • Stucco paint
  • Marine paint (unless registered under Pest Control Products Act)
  • Melamine, metal and anti-rust paint, stain and shellac
  • Swimming pool pain (single component)
  • Stain blocking paint
  • Textured paint
  • Block filler
  • Wood, masonry, driveway sealer or water repellant (non-tar based or bitumen based)
  • LABELLED Empty paint cans
Aerosol Paint

50 can limit.

Other Paint Products

Limit of 12 litres. Overlimit charge of $2.00/Litre. 

  • Unlabelled paint
  • Rusted cans

The following paint products are $3.00/Litre

  • Automotive Paint
  • Industrial Paint
  • Epoxy
  • Craft Paint

Aerosol Cans (non-paint)

Household Aerosols. 10 can limit, over limit $1.00/can. 

  • Bug repellant
  • Crack filler
  • Cleaners
  • Insecticides (ie Raid)
  • Bear spray cans - $5.00/can

Pesticides (Liquids or Solid)

Liquid Pesticides - Domestic

Covered by Produce Care Program. Acceptable pesticides must have: 

  • The poison symbol (skull and crossbones)
  • A Pest Control Product (PCP) number and
  • The word domestic on the label

Max container size is 10 Litres. Unlimited number of containers accepted if it meets above requirements

Other Domestic Pesticides

Not covered by Product Care Program (over 4 L or 4 Kg limit)

  • Anything liquid over 4 Litres is charged $3.50/Litre
  • Solid pesticides over 4 l<g is charged $3.50/kg

NO commercial, agricultural pesticides
NO empty pesticide containers (rinse and throw in garbage) 


Flammables (solids or liquids)

Flammable Liquids

Contains flammable symbol or phrase "keep away from open spark or flame". Examples Include: 

  • Acetone
  • Camp fuel
  • Furniture stripper
  • Kerosene
  • Flammable degreasers
  • Flammable lubricants
  • Methanol
  • Mineral spirits
  • Paint stripper
  • Paint thinner
  • Turpentine
  • Varsol
  • Other solvents

Max container size is 10 litres. No limit to number of containers.

Flammable Solids

Not covered by Product Care Program - 4L limit. Over limit $2.50/Litre

Examples include:

  • Adhesives
  • Roof patch
Gasoline 

Must be in an approved ULC container (Jerry can). Container will not be returned to customer at drop off. Max container size is 25 litres.


Corrosives

Household Cleaners. 4 litre limit - over limit charge $3.50/litre. Examples include:

  • Bleach, ammonia
  • Solid (Comet), semi-solid (floor wax), liquid (Mr. Clean) cleaners
  • Grout, window and furniture cleaner
  • Wood cleaner and strippers
  • Rust, calcium and lime removers
  • Metal cleaners 
  • Degreasers 
  • All-purpose cleaners (ie. Vim, Lysol etc.)

Oxidizers (Pool Chemicals)

4 Litre or 4 Kg limit - overlimit is $5.00/litre or kg

Examples include: 

  • Pool and hot tube chemicals such as chlorine

Other Acceptable Categories

  • Fertilizers - Solid fertilizer (1-kilogram limit - over $2.00 per kilogram)
  • Liquid fertilizer (4-litre limit over $1.00 per litre)
  • Sealants, caulking
  • Solid adhesives (eg. powdered mortar and grout)
  • Fillers (eg. wood, drywall, concrete)
  • Mercury Thermostats

Please note: the Battery Doctors will not accept any empty containers (except empty paint cans) or liquid products that are solidified, these items can go in your regular garbage. Materials in glass containers cannot be accepted for safety reasons unless they are pesticides in the original container. As well, the following products are not accepted: 

  • Ammunition, Flares, Explosives Asbestos products 
  • Cyanide 
  • Radioactive waste 
  • Biomedical waste 
  • Automotive cleaners or polishes Pharmaceuticals 
  • Diesel Fuel, Oil 
  • Agricultural Pesticides
